Apple Cider Vinegar: A Miracle Worker

Okay, maybe not a miracle worker (I tend to like extremes), but apple cider vinegar sure has A TONof health benefits! I take an ACV shot every day before I workout (sometimes twice a day even). A what? Yes. A shot of apple cider vinegar and water aka the healthiest shot you’ll ever take. Why? (Gosh you have a lot of questions ;) ) Well let me tell you! (NOTE: Make sure you are using raw (preferably organic) ACV because it is unprocessed, therefore it has all of the living bacteria and health benefits that we want)

The Health Benefits of ACV:

  1. Potassium: ACV has high levels of potassium, one of the seven macrominerals that our body needs. It is suggested that our body takes in about 4,700mg per day. Potassium helps regulate the functions of all cells, tissues, and organs in our body and it's also one of the main electrolytes that our body needs.

  2. Regulates blood pressure: It isn't completely clear why or how ACV helps regulate blood pressure, but it has been shown that people who use ACV regularly do see a decrease in their blood pressure. But, you must use it regularly and live a healthy life in general to see really big results. :)

  3. Reduces bad cholesterol: ACV supports proper liver function and (okay kind of gross) increases bile production, both of which are important for creating and breaking down cholesterol.

  4. Keep blood sugar levels from rising too fast: ACV is shown to improve insulin sensitivity to high-carbohydrate meals.

  5. Helps with digestion: Encourages the growth of healthy gut bacteria, which aids in digestion.

  6. Helps maintain proper PH levels: Having a PH level in our body that is too acidic can cause trouble with digestion, heart burn, acid reflux, etc. If you’re a big coffee or wine drinker then taking ACV will be very helpful in this area for you!

  7. Removes toxins from the body

  8. Aids in weight loss: ACV helps break down fats so your body can use them instead of store them.

  9. Boosts energy: When the body builds up lactic acid (due to exercise or stress) it causes you to feel tired. The amino acids in ACV (plus its high levels of potassium) help relieve this fatigue!

Of course, if you aren’t ingesting it “correctly” it could in turn hurt you in small ways. Always make sure to dilute your ACV with enough water to dodge tooth enamel decay and harm to your esophagus. I know, it sounds scary, but it’s not I promise! That’s why when I take a shot of it I only put about a centimeter of ACV in the bottom of a shot glass and fill the rest with water. The rule of thumb is 8oz of water to every 1 Tbsp of ACV.

One of my favorite ways to drink my ACV is in the elixir pictured above. I mix about 1 Tbsp of ACV with 1/2 a tsp of cinnamon and 1/4 a tsp of ginger and then mix it all with hot water! Adding a little honey tastes delicious too. It's also a great thing to drink when you're feeling sick or have a sore throat from allergies!
