If you follow me on Instagram you know that this chocolate banana smoothie bowl has been on REPEAT lately. I don’t usually get so obsessed with one meal or combo, but I’ll be the first to admit that I’m addicted to this smoothie.

I recently added cacao and chocolate back into my diet after following the Specific Carbohydrate Diet super strictly (you can read about the start of my journey with SCD here) for about 10 months. Can you imagine 10 months without any form of chocolate!? Yeah, it was just as bad as you think it was.

Okay, that’s a little bit of an exaggeration, because I truly didn’t realize how much I missed it until fully adding it back in. And I’m not sure if it’s because I was deprived of it for so long or I just never realized how much I fricken LOVE chocolate, but I can’t get enough lately!

If it’s not this exact smoothie bowl it’s one of my other variations (the almond joy and turmeric mocha versions that I shared on my Instagram feed will officially be on the blog soon!), chocolate yogurt bowls (using Forager’s plain cashew yogurt mixed with cacao powder and chocolate collagen from Vital Proteins), the Montezuma’s 100% dark chocolate bar from Trader Joe’s or Epic’s new almond butter chocolate protein bars… I’m all about it.

There’s just something about chocolate that’s so comforting. PLUS dark chocolate has tons of health benefits! It is full of antioxidants, it’s been shown to lower blood pressure, it may reduce your risk of heart disease, it could improve brain function and it’s a good source of healthy fats (although it’s technically a saturated fat, it’s been shown to not increase LDL, aka “bad” cholesterol).

The biggest thing I’ve noticed since re-intorudcing chocolate and “allowing” myself to have it again is the feeling of freedom. I’m over my time of disordered eating and living with extreme food rules, but in a way SCD placed other food rules on me that I truly didn’t need to live with. Yes, SCD has been proven to help those with ulcerative colitis and yes, sticking to a mainly SCD way of eating is helpful for me, but I truly realized I can be a little more lenient.

And being a little more lenient has honestly helped my stress levels and anxiety like crazy. Just even adding a couple of things back in (sweet potatoes, rice and chocolate are the main ones) has not only helped me feel better physically, but mentally as well.

It truly made me realize that even scientifically studied and proven diets don’t always help everyone in the same way. Our health, especially gut health, is so individual and unique and can’t be one size fits all.

So I encourage you to take hold of your own health, experiment and TRULY find what works best for you.  And hopefully that includes this chocolate banana smoothie.

XO nat
