Love Your Gut, Eat (Good) Bacteria

With all of my food sensitivities and unknown stomach issues (thankfully I'm on the way to getting some answers!), loving my gut is necessary. I do whatever I can, whenever I can to help it stay healthy. I do this by eating healthy, eating as little processed foods as I can, fueling my body with TONS of nutrients, taking my vitamins, drinking loads of water and keeping my bacteria intake up.

Wait, WHAT?! Yup. You heard me right.

Your gut needs bacteria to digest food properly and to stay healthy. These good bacterias are also known as probiotics and are naturally found in your body, but can also be found in foods, drinks and pills.

Anytime you take antibiotics it reduces the amount of probiotics in your intestines, which can cause bad bacteria to outweigh the good in your body, which won't make your stomach feel too hot. Not enough probiotics in your system can also cause you to get sick more often and have skin issues like eczema.

Thankfully, probiotics are pretty dang easy to take in. You can simply take a probiotic pill (I take one every day! I really like the Garden of Life brand), but you can also get probiotics from a ton of different foods:

  1. Sauerkraut & Kimchi: These mixes of fermented cabbage and other vegetables supports the creation of probiotics. They're also high in enzymes which can aid in digestion. I've been absolutely loving the Firefly caraway kraut and it's made locally to my hometown! (Random salmon bowl inspired by ma girl Jaennette Ogden from ShutTheKaleUp was straight FIRE because of my kraut)

  2. Fermented Gut Shot: I tried the Farmhouse Culture ginger beet fermented gut shot juice a month or so ago and wasn't quite sure what to expect. But DANG. I love it! It takes some getting used to (it kind of tastes like pickle juice...) but I take a shot every day and it makes my tummy v happy. It's made from the fermentation of cabbage and other veg (just like sauerkraut), but is then pressed to just release the juice.

  1. Kombucha: Booch, which is fermented black tea, is my jammm (literally sipping on one right now). I seriously LOVE this stuff and drink it like it's going out of style. It not only helps with digestion, but also energy and liver detoxification. There are so many great brands on the market, but my favorites are GT's, Health-ade and Brew Dr.

  2. Yogurt: Cow, goat or sheep milk yogurt all contain tons of probiotics. Certain types can have even more, so look for grass-fed and organic to up the number. Since I can't eat cow's milk yogurt, I opt for goat's. I've tried a bunch of different brands and my favorite by far is Redwood Hill Farm. I usually go for plain and just add in Vega protein powder, berries or honey to flavor it myself. Ain't about those added sugars.

I still have mystery stomach issues and stomaches daily, BUT I can tell it feels a lot better when I incorporate more probiotics into my diet. Even if you feel like your gut is healthy, try sippin' on some kombucha or chomping on some kraut and see how much healthier you feel. :)
