My 5 Must Haves for Traveling with Ulcerative Colitis

Traveling with chronic illness

Traveling with ulcerative colitis can feel like SUCH a doozy. To make sure I’m setting myself up for success I make sure I have all my go-to’s on hand in my carryon so I’m prepared for anything - mentally and physically. Here are my must-haves for traveling with ulcerative colitis!

  1. Myobi Portable Heating Pad: I haven’t gotten this in the mail yet BUT I already know it’s going to be incredible. There were too many times to count during my busy traveling month of December that I said “I wish I had a portable heating pad.” Next thing I know I saw this on TikTok and preordered it right away.

  2. EMBR Labs Wave 2 Temperature Regulation Support: I’m not sure if it’s because of my ulcerative colitis or just my silly goofy body, but temperature regulation has never been my strong suit. I get extremely warm at random times especially if I’m stressed (like during travel) and then stress triggers my stomach to hurt. My Wave is a life saver when it comes to helping me cool down (it also has a warming feature that is amazing I just… am never too cold LOL).

  3. MiraPro TENS machine for stomach pain and cramps: I gave one of these to my girlfriend who struggles with intense period pain and I ended up using it SO often on the plane, in the airport, in the car, etc. while traveling with her in December. It truly helps so much with the pain it’s mind blowing.

  4. Stomach Ease Tea (also ginger and peppermint tea): Whenever I travel I have a “stomach saver kit” in my backpack - it has my ginger chews, nausea pills, homeopathic nausea pills, and of course, tea. Yogi’s stomach ease tea is my favorite for traveling, but I always keep ginger tea and peppermint tea on me as well. I’ll then just find hot water at a coffee shop or ask for hot water on the plane.

  5. The Ginger People ginger rescue chews: I swear by my ginger chews whenever I’m nauseas or in pain. You know how some people have a backpack, purse, and car lipstick? I have a backpack, purse and car case of ginger chews. hehe

  6. Digestive enzymes (I like these!): Whenever I travel my digestion feels extra off and I tend to get bloated with anything and everything I eat. Making sure to take digestive enzymes when I eat during travel days is a must.

  7. Prescription Nausea Pills: There is no shame in the medication game! I had my doctor prescribe nausea pills and having them has been incredible not only for me physically but also mentally. I sometimes get extremely nauseas because of my ulcerative colitis and it makes me feel super panicky because I hate the feeling. Having my nausea pills on hand, especially while traveling, gives me such peace of mind. Highly suggest asking your doctor about them!

  8. Chronically Chic Travel Pill Case(s): Who says chronically ill folks can’t travel in style!? I love all of the options for cute travel pill cases from Chronically Chic. Code NAT20 saves you money! :)
